I was recently invited to visit The National Self Build & Renovation Centre by Mike Hardwick (an ex RAF colleague who is now a Self Build Visitor Advisor at the centre). I can not recommend a visit too strongly. The centre covers every possible part of the self-build/renovation process. Hard to imagine anybody not benefiting from a visit. See BuildStore
The following pictures give you a flavour of what they have on show. The final sequence of pictures shows a remarkable display where they have created an "Old" house in complete need of restoration. They then reproduce the same rooms etc at several stages of refurbishment. Brilliant!
